BLOCHAUS NEWBURYPORT

The Blochaus is a contemporary art gallery located in Newburyport, MA. In 2020, our Canal Street building in Lawrence was sold and we decided to relocate. We followed the Merrimack River out to the mouth and found an incredible industrial storefront at 74 Water Street in Newburyport, MA. Our intent was to design a micro version of Blochaus 1.0. We have continued to promote, and showcase established contemporary artists we love alongside emerging up-and-comers, and we now feature a variety of artist prints, goods, and accessories.

Our inspiring new space promotes and hosts art openings, curated experiences, live music, special events, movie productions, and photoshoots. Our goal is, as ever, to bring people together in the name of art.

BLOCHAUS ORIGIN

The concept that is “Blochaus” originated in the industrial Canal Street Mills of Lawrence, MA. Founded by artist Markus Sebastiano in 2014, what started as an artist/creative incubator space soon became a beautiful and bright contemporary art gallery — if you could find it, which was part of the adventure. Hosting various group shows and installations starting in 2017, it quickly became one of the most talked-about galleries in New England. Known for its over-the-top and eclectically branded art openings, the Blochaus showcased the work of over 30 artists and brought hundreds of people together. People often remarked, “I feel like I am in Brooklyn".

We attributed our originality to the 3,000 sq. ft. space we inhabited, the natural light of our thinly paned, towering 16 ft. windows, and a century’s worth of organic wall textures. This was all brought to life by the artists, designers, and creatives we housed, their eclectic mix of contemporary art, sculpture, neon clocks, mid-century furniture (by Café Berlin), and the community we had the privilege of nourishing. Long live Blochaus Lawrence.

As part of our natural progression, we evolved into a curation service and took the Blochaus aesthetic to places like the W Hotel Boston, Yotel Skydeck, Red Bull Headquarters, and various other commercial spaces.
